Okay, so I didn’t really write “fuck everything” on that sign, but FAN EXPO Canada was my worst ever convention. I needed to vent. I spent so much money on travel and lodging expenses and I barely sold anything. The Friday at the con, it was open for ten hours and I only sold two books. It makes for long, depressing days…
That said, it happens. Cons and festivals are always a question of luck too: where you’re seated, who’s sitting beside you, the weather, … There’s always a risk you won’t make your money back, and you’ll never know if an event is good for you unless you try it. So I’m happy I finally got to try myself at FAN EXPO, but that was the first and last time. Thanks to all of those who came to see me!
I’m sorry it didn’t go well! I would totally make a trip if your conventions were a bit closer.
Ugh, I’m sorry!
My first comic con back in August was similar, but I did sell some of my stuff and made… a little over half back (not including the initial investment of the merch).
I’m sorry that was your experience, though. Your comics ARE really funny. :D
Are conventions normally a net-positive return on the investment? I’ve seen a few other webcomics mention this and it seems to me like its much riskier than just staying home and selling stuff online.
It’s usually where I do most of my sales! But it’s always a risk, especially the first time you try a con. I usually break even in the worst cases. This one was my biggest failure though— super expensive, and very little sales.
It says a lot that I 1) know what you look like 2) was looking for you and STILL didn’t find you in the artist alley..no wonder you had a bad convention :(
Yeah, I didn’t have a very good spot I think! I was among the comic guests, hugging the wall around artist alley. Thanks for trying though <3
Aww man =( I’m sorry you had such bad luck at Fan Expo, I wasn’t able to make it this year but I would have defiantly stopped by to chat and get my wife into your comics! That said Fan Expo has been less fun lately I’ve been more sticking to the smaller ones like Con Bravo.
