I think my parents’ method when I was little was either waiting until most of us were at school and shopping then, or dividing up and have one parent shop while the other kept us out of trouble.
I say “I think” because I wasn’t the most attentive child, so I never noticed my presents ahead of time anyways. This is just a hypothesis.
