Honest truth: My kid is ten and the epidural spot still hurts. My hubby was listening to a Bujold book-on-tape and it mentioned using a sci-fi stunner for an epidural and I just about cried because nobody’s invented it yet.
I see myself as a girl who is not that afraid of shots, but I understand why some people can’t watch or get nautious when seeing someone getting shots.
Poor Pierre-Luc, and poor Boum. :/
Also, I love how you showed him feeling nautious by not drawing eyes, instead of the classic spinning thingies.
I feel kinda stupid for asking this, but wikipedia couldn’t explain it that well. What is epidural?
(I know it’s a painkiller, but how did they inject it?)
Je vais y être avec ma copine! Suite à votre rencontre à Sherbrooke, nous vous suivons chaque semaine! En espérant que vous allez avoir quelques exemplaires de vos bouquins à vendre :D
Epidurals can cause some permanent damage and scar tissue from separation of the vertebrae or even paralyze you if done incorrectly. I’m glad to see that you are okay, Boum.
I would GLADLY go through the abject misery of chemical-free labour if it meant not getting a needle that had to stay in place, let alone a frikkin’ TUBE up my SPINE.
I think most women want to avoir the epidural if possible. Thing is, sometimes labour is really long and it is very, very painful. I’d gone 10 hours drug-free, and when they checked me, I had only dilated 1 cm. I was hungry and exhausted so I asked for the epidural, which allowed me to rest, and I dilated 6 cm in two hours afterwards. I regret nothing!
(But also I’m not squeamish when it comes to needles.)
I’ve had two spinal surgeries and several spinal injections and even then an epidural makes me cringe. Nope nope nope. I’d rather have a catheter again. Makes my back hurt thinking about it D:
Also, I’m loving the archives and can’t wait to catch up to the new stuff!
Absolutely right. My wife was in the exact same position. She struggled for hours with natural childbirth, i.e. no drugs, and hadn’t been able to relax enough to allow her body to do the actual work of preparing to give birth. Her contractions were so strong they caused the meter to “tilt”. Same experience, after the epi she opened up and baby made itself known.
For my wife they had her curl into the fetal position on her side while they did the epidural. It made it a lot easier overall imho. Way belated congrats by the way.

They actually insert a tube in your spine and leave it there for the whole labour. Pretty weird. But you can barely feel any pain afterwards!
Into…your…spine o.o oh god…
Yep, now you understand why Pierre-Luc nearly passed out :P
I’m surprised you didn’t! I know I would have just *thump* on the floor…

You’re all distracted by pain and baby, and then the nurse sneaks up behind you like a ninja in scrubs.
