oh my god… I know what she’ll want to dress up as this Halloween!
Ugh, what the heck is up with gendered toys? Especially stuff that has to do with cooking and housework always seem to be seen as ‘girly’ and ‘cutesy’, it’s sexist to think that only girls should clean up and cook and boys get guns and cars and literally anything but housework. (okay almost done with rant)
It’s 2015, why do toy companies continue with these things?! ‘Pink is girly, blue is for boys’ F*ck that, how about we teach everyone that they can be anything they want regardless of gender, most of their lives they’ll need to know how to cook themself and drive cars, why not start their lives by telling them they can do that.
Rant over.
The last panel is actually the adorablest thing ever
They know it ain’t the kids who buy toys. And enough parents either accept the gender stereotypes, or are keen for their kids to fit in with other kids, that there’s more money to be lost by bucking the trend than by going with the flow.
Plus doing what’s always been done is so much easier to justify to accountants.
You should make her a broom yourself! Just get a regular, classic looking broom and shorten the ends a bit. And sandpaper the handle of course, wouldn’t want splinters.
We got my son a couple of broom sets for Christmas for the same damage-control reasons. The one we got from Amazon is purple and green, so it’s a little more gender neutral. His grandma got him a really cute little janitors cart that has a mop, broom, bucket, dustpan, and mini broom. He loves sweeping up, usually while I’m trying to sweep up which is very counter-productive, but eh, it’s the thought that counts!
I have a KiKi related story to tell. Kiki was the first dubbed anime film by Miyazaki that my now 12 year old cut her teeth on. At around the age of three, she watched it every day. We even had the exact same broom as the shop keepers near the end of the movie, so what did my kid do? Why emulate the “Fly!” scene where Kiki goes to save the day of course. Granted, my poor daughter kept emulating the scene so much, I actually had to take away the broom for a while. Her poor little knees were red and bruised from crashing on the floor so much. ^^; It was cute at first, but after a while, I didn’t want her to seriously hurt herself if she tried to jump off the couch while trying to ‘fly”. Seeing your comics reminded me of my daughters own Kiki phase, so I simply had to share. Keep up the great work.
Hi I actually love this comic and the series. I was wondering what materials where used on the broom you bought your daughter. Because you can logically repaint the broom even give her a fake radio and what not. Anyway just wanted to say I’m with on the fight against gender oriented toys. Good look with your little witch and thanks for giving me a smile.

*sad sigh*

That’d be pretty cool in my opinion.

That is THE CUTEST STORY EVER

It’s plastic. I’ll see if I can modify it!
That last panel is everything.
We got our daughter a penguin broom – it was red and black and yellow, because we COULDN’T find a girly looking one like she wanted. :(
I really need to watch that movie again.
