This was probably the nicest thing that happened to him all day, if he was walking around with a face like that! Your smile was a gift! And perhaps he could not smile back right away – maybe he was surprised someone smiled at him; or perhaps those muscles had atrophied bit and didn’t respond. But I can’t imagine he was not cheered by your smile, even if it didn’t show.
Trust me, even if it *was* your 3rd grade teacher, there would be an excellent chance that you’ve changed enough since you were 8 that he wouldn’t recognize you anyway. ;-)

This happens to me with unfortunate regularity. I’m convinced I recognize someone, and they’re all: Nooo, Go away, weirdo. :-/
