Actually, a number of farm houses were built like this in the 1930s and ’40s so that separate rooms didn’t have to be heated in Winter. (Heat costs money and/or resources [wood or coal] and privacy wasn’t really a priority.)
It might have been a transition phase from the chamber pot under the bed to the entirely separate bathroom. Not having a lock on the door just means someone had the kind of children who lock themselves in and then say they can’t open the door.
All the toilet stuff is finally starting to make sense!

They don’t have kids so the door not locking isn’t a bother unless we come over. ;)
