So I stayed in the elevator for quite a while and I even had to text someone to learn I had to keep the damn “door close” button pressed until the elevator had started moving.

I’ve read that a lot of the time those “close doors” buttons are actually just there to give people the illusion of control and don’t actually do anything. I’ve never heard of one where you _must_ use the button for the elevator doors to close.
Me either. I always have just pushed the floor button and the doors close themselves.
My uncle’s friend who works as a bell hop for a Four Seasons hotel says the door close buttons that don’t do anything are usually off by themselves because they aren’t even connected. The ones that are on the main panel with the other buttons are the ones that might actually work (but no guarentees).
